Theatre and comedy

A comedy triple treat features Cal Wilson — a perennial favourite on television shows such as Have You Been Paying Attention, Spicks and Specks, Thank God You're Here, and more recently I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here. This incredibly funny New Zealander’s stand-up shows are as engaging as they are hilarious. Cal is joined by multi-award-winning comedian, author and broadcaster Sami Shah, and Annie Louey, one of the fastest rising stars of the Melbourne comedy scene.

In theatre, Damian Callinan’s The Merger is a one-man show that has been developed into a Netflix hit. The Merger explores a rural town’s ailing football team, and the local vision and politics of resurrecting it by welcoming an influx of asylum seekers.

The Lamm Jewish Library treats us to poetry readings by four talented writers — Prague-born Betyna Bock; local writer and 2018 winner of Council’s My Brother Jack Awards Open Poetry category, Andrew Harris; physician and award-winning writer, Leah Kaminsky whose debut novel won the Voss Literary Prize; and prolific author Alex Skovron whose retrospective poetry volume was shortlisted in the 2015 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.

From the Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre, the sweet and the bitter, the heartbreaking, the hopeful and the hopeless, the funny and even the ferocious sides of Jews at work will come to life through story and song in Work. Eat. Pray., featuring Freydi Mrocki and Tomi Kalinski, Joe Waislitz, Joe Tigel, Ilana Forbes, Danielle Charak and Evelyn Krape.

The Glen Eira Storytelling Festival makes its long-awaited live return in 2022, with events and programs for all ages and interests.

From exhibitions and concerts, theatre and comedy to live discussions, poetry and book readings — this year’s program brings us back together as a community, celebrates storytelling and helps us to think deeply about who we are in the world.
